Welcome to the fifth edition of our online annual Damen magazine. This year’s volume is a special one, marking as it does 90 years since brothers Jan and Marinus Damen started Damen Brothers Shipyard. In these pages we take a look back at the events, vessels and – most importantly of all – the people that have contributed to the Damen story. Enjoy reading!

Damen Shipyards Group

Damen is celebrating nine decades of operations in the shipbuilding industry. From small beginnings in the 1920s, the company has grown into a renowned maritime service provider that employs 9,000 people. With Dutch roots, Damen’s expansion has been global. This growth can be viewed in terms of its yards, service hubs and other subsidiary companies as well as a globally-operating client base. For 90 years, Damen’s vessel designs have successfully served customers operating on all over the world.

Damen was originally established by two brothers, Jan and Rien Damen, in 1927. From facilities located on the banks of the River Merwede in Hardinxveld, the Netherlands, they managed the growing firm into a well-respected business.

Maersk Connector wins the Offshore Support Ship 2017 Award

Maersk Connector wins the Offshore Support Ship 2017 Award

On 8th February at the Offshore Support Journal Annual Awards in London, the Maersk Connector received the Offshore Support Ship 2017 Award. The Maersk Supply Service owned vessel is the second of Damen Shipyards Group’s Offshore Carrier 8500 series and was awarded for setting an industry benchmark through its innovative design and efficiency in operation.

The Maersk Connector was built at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania and delivered to Maersk Supply Service in 2016. Since then, she has been on long term charter with UK-based DeepOcean working on a number of projects. The design of the vessel, and her subsequent success, is the result of a close collaboration between the three parties.

Damen takes position in the Caribbean

Damen Shiprepair Curaçao, The Netherlands

Following the agreement made between the Government of Curaçao and Damen Shipyards Group in September last year, Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) has taken over the management of the Curaçao Droogdok Maatschappij (CDM) as of February 1st, 2017. The location will continue its activities under the name of Damen Shiprepair Curaçao (DSCu).

With this step Damen expands its ship repair activities across the Trans-Atlantic Ocean. The yard is strategically located on the route to the Panama Canal, outside the Hurricane Belt and offers excellent working conditions within a natural bay. As Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, smooth logistic connections and fast import of required materials are guaranteed.

On 28th December 2016, the Fujairah yard of Albwardy Damen celebrated 5 years without a single lost time incident (LTI). This success is the result of the venture’s intense focus on safety in everything that it does.

The 5 years of LTI free operations was marked by a small ceremony at the Fujairah yard attended by local port authorities, clients of Albwardy Damen and other stakeholders. Speaking at the event, Lars Seistrup, Managing Director Albwardy Damen, stated his pride in the achievement and affirmed that the venture would remain dedicated to safety going forwards.

Shortest delivery time ever

Damen delivers stock CSD450 within 3 working days on site

Damen Dredging Equipment, The Netherlands

On Monday the 19th of September, a Damen CSD450 started winning sand at the Frisian motorway project contractor Van der Lee is working on. The ink on the sales contract was not even dry yet – it being signed on Thursday only. The stock dredger was prepared for transport on Friday and towed to the north of the Netherlands over the weekend, so that it could make a flying start on the Monday.

The Damen InvaSave ballast water treatment (BWT) system has won the Innovation in Port Equipment award at the inaugural IHS DPC Dredging and Port Construction Innovation Awards. These took place on the evening of the 10th of November in the Marriott Hotel in Mayfair, London. Damen InvaSave competed with four finalists in its category to take the award.

Damen Dredging Equipment officially opens offices after comprehensive refit

On the 9th of November, Mr Kommer Damen, Chairman of the Damen Shipyards Group, officially reopened the offices of Damen Dredging Equipment (DDE) in Nijkerk following an extensive refit and extension. Among the many improvements, the building now provides visitors with a complete ‘dredging experience’, starting with displays in the hallways illustrating the challenges of living in the Low Countries and explaining why dredging has been an integral part of their history. The first floor then shows visitors how Damen and dredging together make a unique combination based on an exceptional standard of excellence. The remaining floors complete the experience with exhibitions bringing to life the breadth of Damen’s dredging expertise. Equipment and hands-on demonstrations showcase the capabilities that Damen offers across capital, maintenance, environmental and aggregate dredging. In all, around 550m² of new space has been added.

This included seminars on the latest developments and on-the-water demonstrations of a selection of Damen vessels.

To mark this year’s Interferry Conference in Manila, the Philippines, Damen Shipyards Group has teamed up with Netherlands Shipping Training Centre (NSTC), managed by the international maritime education and training organisation STC-Group. Damen and NSTC have developed a training course for the Philippines-based ferry crew. The training package will feature a number of elements, including rules and regulations (ISM code), crew and crisis management and, important in public transportation, cross cultural differences.

AMELS and DAMEN are pleased to announce the sale of the first DAMEN SeaXplorer expedition yacht. The world premiere of this range of 65, 90 and 100-metre ‘true explorer’ designs took place last September at the Monaco Yacht Show.
The SeaXplorer 65 is a crossover between professional technology and superyacht exclusivity; it is proven capability where you need it, superyacht luxury where you want it.
The expedition yacht offers 40 days of autonomy without port call and complies with the stringent new environmental and safety standards in the IMO Polar Code's B category.
Following the sale, the SeaXplorer 65 is scheduled for delivery in 2019.

Damen continues growth in South Korean ferry market

Damen Shipyards Group has sold a Fast Ferry 4212 to South Korean ferry operator DAEA Express Shipping. The vessel, named Sea Flower, is the fourth ferry of this design that Damen has sold in the last five years to companies operating on the east coast of the Korean peninsula.

On 4 February 2016 the DP2 cable installation vessel Maersk Connector was handed over from Damen Shipyards Group to Maersk Supply Service. The vessel is going directly on a long-term charter for subsea services provider DeepOcean. The on-time, on-budget delivery marks the successful cooperation between Damen, Maersk Supply Service and DeepOcean. Based on Damen’s DOC 8500 platform, the vessel has been customised to meet the challenges of reducing offshore renewables costs.

Good year for Damen Shipyards Sharjah

2 conversions, 8 vessels and 165 drydockings in 2015

Damen Shipyards Sharjah (DSS) was officially opened in January 2014. Now, two years later, the yard celebrates its anniversary with a total of 13 vessels being dry-docked simultaneously. The vessels include pilot boats, landing craft, OSVs, as well as a cable-laying vessel. DSS has had success since its opening in both the newbuild and conversion markets, as well as the repair sector. In 2015 DSS we delivered eight newbuilds, carried out two complex conversions and dry-docked 165 vessels from all the major operators in the region.

Bibby Marine Services orders first-ever Damen Service Operations Vessel

On 15 January, Bibby Marine Services Limited, part of Bibby Line Group, signed a contract with the Damen Shipyards Group for delivery of its first Service Operations Vessel (SOV) with walk-to-work access. The vessel, Bibby WaveMaster 1, will undertake offshore wind project work in the North Sea. It is the first vessel purpose-built for the transfer and accommodation of offshore personnel and aims to maximise working time and staff retention. The design guarantees fast, safe and comfortable access to turbines, at lower cost, up to 80% of the time, including in worst case scenario Central North Sea conditions, resulting in a vessel capable of providing access up to 3.1 metre Hs.

The European Innovation Project LeanShips – Low Energy And Near To Zero Emissions Ships – aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of energy saving and emission reduction technologies at real scale. LeanShips is one of the first projects funded under the new European Research and Innovation Framework Program HORIZON 2020.

The project is coordinated by Damen Shipyards Group and jointly managed by the Netherlands Maritime Technology Foundation (NMT), the Center of Maritime Technologies (CMT) from Germany and Cetena, the Italian Ship Research Centre.

LeanShips officially started on 1 May 2015 with a grant of 17 million Euro. The large project partnership consists of ship owners, shipyards, equipment suppliers and research institutes. In total, 46 partners (81% from industry) from 12 EU member states and one associated country are part of the project.

Due to the urgent need for water in the region, Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, the Netherlands, is putting all its efforts into a fast delivery.

Combining a Stan Pontoon 3011 with water making technology is a first for Damen. Bringing both technologies together in one unit is a unique and innovative solution to the current water shortage in Morocco. No stranger to fast deliveries, Damen is aiming to transport the completed pontoon to Morocco before the end of September 2015.

Every part of the EcoLiner has been designed to reduce fuel consumption

LNG-powered EcoLiner delivers dramatic fuel savings

Early February Damen Shipyards Group launched the first LNG-powered Damen EcoLiner inland shipping tanker at its Romanian yard. The EcoLiner is developed to deliver much-needed fuel economy for inland shipping operators while at the same time cutting emissions. The EcoLiner design combines conventional, proven engineering with sustainable innovations, including the world’s first installations of the ACES Air-Lubricated Hull, a gas-electrical shaft propulsion system and one of the first Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel installations. The pioneering vessel dramatically reduces fuel costs by up to 25%. The European Union, following its ambitious goal towards greening the transport sector, co-finances this project from the Trans-European Transport Network Programme with more than €1.1 million as part of the project “LNG Masterplan for Rhine-Main-Danube”.

Kommer Damen wins OSJ Industry Leader Award

Award presented at annual Offshore Support Journal Awards, London

At the annual Offshore Support Journal Conference gala dinner held on 18 February, 2015, Mr. Kommer Damen, Chairman of Damen Shipyards Group, received the award for Industry Leader of the year, as selected by OSJ's editorial team and the conference advisory panel.

The award was made based on “his vision, which has been at the heart of the phenomenal growth that Damen Shipyards has seen in recent years. The company now operates 32 shipyards worldwide and has an annual turnover of 2 billion”. Founded in 1927, the group has built over 5,000 vessels since 1969 (when Kommer Damen took over the yard from his father and uncle). Today Damen delivers in excess of 160 ships a year.

Mr Damen also has a number of other roles in industry in the Netherlands. He is a board member at the Dutch Shipbuilding Association; a board member of Dutch Maritime Network (NML); a member of the supervisory board at Platform Bèta Techniek; and an Honorary Consul of the Federal States of Mexico.

Damen also awarded ‘Best Offshore Patrol Boat’ of 2014

The Australian-based, but worldwide read, magazine Work Boat World has for the second year running designated Damen Shipyards Group the Best Overall Builder of the Year. In its review of the work boat industry during 2014 it stated that its decision was based on the fact that Damen “continues to produce what the global industry wants. Invariably, it does that on-time and on-budget.”



In the same review, Damen’s FCS 3307 Patrol 'Guardian 1', owned and operated by Homeland Integrated Offshore Services Ltd., was named ‘Best Offshore Patrol Boat’ of 2014’.

Winner of the “Ship of the Year Award” for revolutionary SAR boat

KNRM, Delft University of Technology, De Vries Lentsch Naval Architects and Damen: maritime cooperation leads to innovation

Damen and its partners have won the Royal Netherlands Society for Marine Engineering (KNVTS) ‘Ship of the Year Award’ for Nh1816, the first of a series of the SAR 1906, a revolutionary new Search & Rescue boat, at the Maritime Awards Gala 2014 held in Rotterdam.

Jaap Gelling, Director High Speed Craft of Damen, says: “We are absolutely delighted that this very special vessel has received this accolade. The SAR 1906 is sailing proof that investment in R&D and innovation works!”

Developed in close collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM), Delft University of Technology and De Vries Lentsch Naval Architects, the new type is the future ‘big boat’ of KNRM, the so-called ‘Nh1816 Class’ (named after its sponsor, insurance company ‘De Noordhollandsche van 1816’).

Proud ceremony follows sophisticated Sail Training Vessel’s successful sea trials. The three-masted steel clipper, named RNOV Shabab Oman II, will sail the world’s oceans as an ambassador for Oman, demonstrating the country’s centuries-old maritime tradition. Damen Shipyards Group unveiled a pioneering new mobile ballast water treatment (BWT) unit. The new in-house technology bolsters Damen’s Ballast Water Centre of Excellence, which advises fleet managers on total BWT solutions for retrofits and new builds worldwide.

Damen has also developed the world’s first mobile treatment vessel to operate in ports and support ship deballasting operations. The first of these customized Damen barges, fitted with Damen InvaSave units, is now under construction for service in the Dutch ports of Eemshaven and Delfzijl. One of the most important (financial) partners in this project is the ‘Waddenfonds’, the organisation focusing on the preservation of the ‘Waddensea’, which is listed as a protected UNESCO world heritage site.

The Government of the Bahamas signed a Letter of Intent to acquire 9 vessels for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and construction work for their naval bases with Damen Shipyards Group. For the Royal Bahamas Defence Force project the company is partnering with one of the world’s largest dredging companies – Van Oord – to deliver the entire package in the shortest possible time frame, commencing in early 2014. In 2012 postgraduate student Jingjing Liu carried out research at Damen Shipyard Gorinchem into a new class of sustainable fishing vessel. The objective was to find a balance between delivering sufficient income for the owner and minimal environmental impact including keeping to sustainable fishing levels. Evaluating LNG as a potential fuel was one element. Liu also undertook a comprehensive study of the potential for the boat to generate extra income as an offshore support vessel in periods when fishing was prohibited due to quotas being reached or closed seasons.

Genesis of the Damen's ASD Tugs

In 1991 the Tugs & Workboats Product Group started to develop the ‘ASD Tug’, and entirely new standard tugboat design driven by two thrusters aft. The A stands for Azimuth (= angle or direction), the S stands for Stern and the D stand for Drive.
The first ASD Tug was built as a result of a contract in Taiwan with the Damen Technical Cooperation. The first ASD Tug to be built entirely in the Netherlands, type 3110, was sold in 1993 for an Italian customer.

Damen kept on growing gradually and soon the group started exporting. The Damen dredging workboats quickly became the standard in many foreign markets and Kommer Damen saw the opportunity to export. Later on Kommer Damen took over numerous yards specialised in niche markets where he saw an opportunity to invest. And Damen started partnerships and business cooperations with yards all over the world.

Her Majesty Queen Beatrix christened the Tall Ship 'Eendracht'

Stichting Het Zeilend Zeeschip (The Sailing Sea-going Vessel Foundation) commissioned Damen to construct a schooner of just under 60 metres.

This schooner was to be called the ‘Eendracht’ (‘Harmony’) and in 1989 it was delivered to its owners and christened by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.

By the end of 1986 it was obvious that the serious slump in the shipbuilding industry would continue. This was sufficient reason for Damen to focus its take-over policy on yards that enjoyed a profitable share in niche markets. In some instances production also had to be transferred to other countries. Damen also started purchasing repair yards that were able to operate cost effectively.

Damen in the Middle East

The dredging industry purchased dozens of 'Pushy Cats' that were used to expand the harbours.


Accidentally, the world oil crises of 1973 helped the sales success of Damen. Several countries in the Middle East experienced tremendous growth. At that time worldwide demand for oil was enormous. Almost all harbours in the Middle East were being dredged. The dredging industry purchased dozens of 'Pushy Cats' that were used to expand the harbours. At that time Damen set up its own sales organisation for the Middle East.

Damen Field Service starts

A ship out of commission costs a lot of money; in the 70s 'Damen Field Service' was established.

In 1952 yard number 200 was launched. It was the motor launch Nima, built to the order of the Rotterdam Shipping Company, Van Ommeren.

The Dutch Department of Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) is a regular customer since 1934.


The Dutch Department of Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) is a regular customer since 1934. In this year they ordered a first motor launch, named ‘the Dordrecht’. Many more orders were to come, such as the ‘Libel’ (‘Dragonfly’), a sounding boat. After this period Damen built vessels for this customer almost every year.

The 'Petrolea' was built to the order of a Dutch supplier of fuels.


The 'Petrolea' was built to the order of a Dutch supplier of fuels. This small oil vessel supplied passing ships with fuel loaded from a stationary lighter.

Start building provision barges

The first Provision Barge was delivered in 1928. It featured a second hand automobile engine, scores of storage shelves in the panelling and even interior lighting.

Damen ultimately built 22 of these barges.

Yard number 1 of the Damen brothers was a flat bottomed model of their own design measuring 4.8 metres long and 1.7 metres wide and was sold for 175 dutch guilders.
