Summary

The Weight Engineer will initially validate the weight estimation from the Proposal phase. Thereafter the weight engineer is working on calculating, collecting and analysis of component and subsystem weight information from Vendor data, PDM and 3D CAD. This information is periodically reported in the Lightship Weight report. The weight engineer shall also communicate with the hydrostatic specialist and hydrodynamic specialist with respect to the weight and CoG limitations.

Communication with the engineering team and subcontractors is vital. The weight report and advice shall be periodically reported to the Project Management. If necessary the weight engineer shall advice on corrective measures.

Tasks & Responsibilities 

  • Weight and Centre of Gravity analysis is of utmost important for (naval) vessels and has a broad relevance in the design/engineering/production process.
  • Communicate with the project engineers on the engineering status and changes.
  • Develop and manage semi-automated processes for weight data collection, for further analysis of the ship systems and its subsystems
  • Implement and maintain processes to ensure data quality
  • Advice on the ship design during conceptual design w.r.t. subsystem weight estimates and margins.

Profile

  • Holds a bachelor degree in naval architecture, maritime engineer or equivalent.
  • Preferably has experience with ship design.
  • Has experience with weight control.
  • Experience with programming or data analysis software.
  • Working experience may be limited.
  • Has an affinity for and relevant experience in the maritime industry.
  • Good command of Dutch and English language (writing and speaking).

Department Information

DSNS boasts a state of the art Engineering organization, which is responsible for basic and detailed engineering of ships consigned to DSNS for production at the Vlissingen yard and to an increasing extent for production abroad.

The Research & Technology Support group is part of the Engineering Department and is made up of various specialists. The group conducts research and supports developments regarding new types of ship, as well as supporting the Products & Proposals Department in order to determine the ship design. The group also supports Engineering and Production when detailing the contracts and instructions. Nowadays naval vessels and complex vessels are more and more designed with full electric propulsion or hybrid propulsion.
