The ship’s (damage) stability needs to comply with specific requirements dependent on the ship type. The calculation results are embodied in the stability manual on board of the vessel. To help the vessel’s Master or Commanding Officer make quick and proper decisions, after being hit or collided, the impact of the damage to the stability of the vessel should be known in a short time. For this purpose it is the intention to calculate the impact of all kinds of damage extents beforehand. The assignment would be to automatically generate all the damage cases using the programming language Python to generate input for the stability software.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Program in Python a damage definition and generation system that will generate for a given ship automatically the damage cases for the stability software.
The task requires no maritime knowledge and the input files, detailed description of the system are to be provided by the Hydrostatics Team.
The formatting has not been determined in order not to limit the possibilities and preferred to be decided together with the tool developer. An extension of the task is possible to also automatically visualize the output of the stability software in so called “Carpet Plots”.
The right student:
- is proactive, flexible and takes initiative;
- can work both independently and in a team;
- is stress-proof and accurate;
- has good knowledge of the Dutch and English language (both verbally and in writing);
- has programming experience in Python.
DSNS boasts a state of the art Engineering organization, which is responsible for basic and detailed engineering of ships consigned to DSNS for production at the Vlissingen yard and to an increasing extent for production abroad.
The Research & Technology Support group is part of the Engineering Department and is made up of various specialists. The group conducts research and supports developments regarding new types of ship, as well as supporting the Products & Proposals Department in order to determine the ship design. The group also supports Engineering and Production when detailing the contracts and instructions. Nowadays naval vessels and complex vessels are more and more designed with full electric propulsion or hybrid propulsion.
