Today most of our ships are made from steel or aluminium. But for an increasing number of High Speed Craft and Fast Ferry designs the traditional construction materials are being replaced with composites. Adjacent to the developments in composites more and more non-metal solutions are applied on board of our ships. Recently for instance two novel examples were launched. Firstly the RSD Tug 2513 was built with an adhesive bonded joint between the superstructure and the hull. This adhesive joint enabled significant noise reduction in the deckhouse and better ease of assembly, which could not be obtained with conventional joining techniques. Secondly a novel fender was developed for our offshore wind crew suppliers, which enables crew transfer at higher sea states than conventional designs.
To expand our innovation strength in the field of non-metal ship structures, we are looking for a Senior Research Engineer in the Research and Development department. The Research Engineer should be specialized in one of the following topics: composites, adhesive bonding or rubbers/elastomers. It would be a pre if the engineer has several years of relevant experience with these materials in relation to offshore, maritime or aerospace structures.
Tasks & Responsibilities
As a Senior Research Engineer you should be able to:
- Lead and manage internal and external research projects with partners;
- Manage the expectations of the internal stakeholders;
- Provide support and guide other team members in the Netherlands and abroad;
- Keep up to date of the latest developments, research and concepts in the field of non-metal structures and translates them into opportunities for Damen.
In the function close cooperation is required with our Design & Proposal, Engineering and Production departments. This requires a flexible customer oriented approach while continuously assessing the quality of the proposed solutions.
For the research into non-metal structures material tests as well as prototype tests are conducted. Next to that, simulations are made with Matlab and NX CAE. Knowledge of testing non-metal structure and working with the simulation programs is preferred. To provide additional value to the answers a creative, innovative way of thinking is required.
- Education: Msc Offshore, Maritime or Aerospace Technology;
- Specialisation in either composites / rubber or adhesive bonding;
- Being a senior with relevant work experience is a pre;
- Language skills: Dutch word and speech fluently or willing to learn Dutch;
- English word and speech fluently;
- Practical attitude, Customer focused, Goal-oriented, Analytical.
Department InformationThe Research & Development (R&D) department gives support to, and collaborates very closely with, the Damen business units and sister companies in the development of an innovative product portfolio. The R&D department aspires to critically check designs and concepts and to proactively give technical advices to improve quality and performance of the products and services. In addition there is a proactive collaboration with the Business Development, the Business Units, Services and the Repair & Conversion branch of the Damen Group. The R&D department has the goal to develop knowledge in all strategically relevant technical knowledge domains and to make it accessible to the relevant stakeholders. In these technical knowledge domains, Damen wants to be among the best in the world in order to stimulate innovation based on a sound technical knowledge and to contribute to product developments throughout the Damen Group. In this role the R&D department and especially the development teams critically follow the technological developments and act independently from the business units.
