About us

Damen Shipyards Galati covers an area of approximatelly 55 hectares and in 2018 it turned 125 years of activity. Since the takeover by the Damen Group, the shipyard has delivered 29 military ships to 13 different countries, including NATO and EU member countries. At Galati there were built Anchor maneuvering ships, coastguard vessels, patrol/military ships, PortControl vessels, RoRo ships, ferries, dredges and barges. ASD 3212 type tugs bearing the Damen signature are a common presence on the launching lines of the Galati yard, on their short road towards the Danube.

In addition to boats, crew service vessels and cargo ships, Damen Galati quickly built a rich list of reference which includes ships that feature top products in the Damen portfolio. Among the most notable projects, we mention the 205-meter 'Karel Doorman' Logistic Support Ship built for the Dutch Military Navy, the first 28-meter Hybrid full-length tug built for the Dutch Iskes towing company, the Simon Stevin Research Ship built for the Flemish government and Heavy Lift type ship for Jumbo, ‘Fairplayer’. Among the recent projects worth mentioning are: Damen Offshore Carrier 8500 Maersk Connector, a new generation of submarine cable installation boats, Bibby WaveMaster 1 Logistics Support Ship with walk-to-work functionality and customized design for operations in areas with wind platforms, the Supply and Research Ship for the Australian Antarctic Division, a vessel that will facilitate Australia's wider exploration of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Continent.

In addition to Damen quality standards, Damen Shipyards Galati integrates a Quality Policy System into its management process. The system meets the following standards: ISO 9001: 2008 for Quality Management System, OHSAS 18001: 2008 for Occupational Health & Safety Management System, ISO 14001: 2005 for Environmental Management System, Lloyd's Register JH 143 on Risk Assessment and Certificate AQAP 2120 (Allied Quality Assurance / NATO Standardization).

The role

The Environmental Protection Officer (HSE) is responsible for ensuring compliance and environmental compliance, awareness of workers in the knowledge and respect of environmental legislation and standards, in order to avoid environmental accidents during production activities.

Key accountabilities

  • Accommodates in detail and complies with the environmental legislation in force, as well as the procedures and instructions of DSGa.
  • Responsible for implementing the measures / implementation of the actions set out in the PV / RI of the local authorities and undertaking the necessary steps for the actions / actions for which it has defined responsibilities.
  • Identifies actual or potential nonconformities during ongoing activities, and records non-conformities and corrective / preventive actions under the SMI procedure.
  • Participates in the elaboration of:
    • the environmental performance assessment records;
    • a need for technical documentation of information and training of workers in the field of environmental protection;
    • the theme for all phases of training, the establishment of appropriate periodicity for each job, the provision of information and training to workers in the field of environmental protection and the verification of the knowledge and application of the information received by the workers;
    • the plans required by the legislation in the field.
  • Centralizes the environmental indicators that need to be monitored and the frequency stipulated in legislation, regulations and other environmental requirements.
  • Prepares reports to APM, ARPM and GNM CJ Galati.
  • Checks that firms that take hazardous and / or non-hazardous waste hold all the approvals / authorizations required to perform such operations;
  • Participate along with local authorities in sampling for analyzes to determine the degree of pollution for environmental factors.

Skills & experience

  • Environmental engineering studies.
  • Experience of minimum 2 years in a similar position;
  • Knowledge of English - written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of Romanian – written and verbal communication – native level
  • Knowledge of national legislation on environmental protection.
  • PC operating skills (MS Office - Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Positive thinking, openness, lifelong learning, initiative, loyalty to the company's interests.
  • Very good communication skills in order to collaborate with a wide range of people inside and outside the company.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation is constantly concerned with the assimilation of information in this area and the adaptation of the content of the legislation to the particularities of the work processes within the DSGa.
