At Damen Workboats our goal is to develop, design, and construct a portfolio of tugs, dredgers or workboats in the most effective and efficient manner, primarily based on series production of (smart-customized) standard designs. The role

As a Mechanical Engineer you will be part of the standardization team which is responsible for the development of the standard systems, parts and solutions. Within the standardization team, all the building blocks will be developed (including class approval), which will be integrated in the new or existing ship designs. This to increase the commonality over the various ship-types, which in the end leads to reduction of cost, shortened engineering lead time and an improved overall quality.

The main activities of the standardization team are:

  • Supporting the Services department and the Yards in case of problems related to the standard designs, especially in hydraulic related issues;
  • Standardization and development of hydraulic systems and the hydraulic part of equipment. But also Standardization and development Mechanical projects in general. All projects are done under the ultimate responsibility of the Project Manager Engineering;
  • Creating a well-supported technical design and solution, based on functional and/or stakeholder requirements;
  • Ensuring that the designs and solutions comply to the applicable rules and standards. In case of non-compliances, you are able to work out an equivalent solution with the Society concerned.

 

Key accountabilities

  • Executing all the phases of engineering according the V-model. From the setting-up of functional requirements until the preparation of commissioning protocols;
  • Being able to set-up a project plan and perform it from end-to-end;
  • Assessing and analysing input of suppliers, services, detailed engineering and suppliers;
  • Working closely together with all stakeholders;
  • Monitoring quality and organizing interface and system integration with other disciplines and co-makers;
  • Performing (complex) calculations related to Class, load/power, strength and flow in the mechanical engineering field;
  • Supporting the Class and National Authorities approval process;
  • Preparing system diagrams, propulsion arrangements and outfitting drawings;
  • Preparing Test protocols and analyse the test results;
  • Preparing Design Philosophies, Measurements and Commissioning protocols;
  • Coordinating the work to the Engineers in the team;
  • Outsourcing of work to our 3D Engineering partners.

 

Skills & experience

As a Mechanical Engineer in the standardization team you need to have the following:

  • A quality consciousness and a practical approach;
  • You are an easy-going person, pro-active, creative, showing ownership and result driven;
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering, preferably in the field of Mechanical Engineering;
  • A minimum of 8 years of working experience in Mechanical Engineering in the maritime sector;
  • Specialist technical knowledge in one or two more specific mechanical disciplines, of which hydraulics is an important one;
  • Familiarity with the Rules and Regulations and being able to interpret it and translate it for our ship-type portfolio;
  • Experience with AutoCAD;
  • An interest in innovation and an open mindset to new technologies;
  • Good communication skills in managing stakeholders;
  • English is a must, Dutch is a plus.
