About us

The MSV Division (Mid-Sized Vessels) represents one of the four ship-newbuild domains of Damen Shipyards, alongside Workboats, Yachting and Naval. MSV focuses on selling, designing, engineering, building and commissioning of mid-sized vessels; these are characterized as technologically complex, ETO (engineered-to-order) and built as one-off or in limited series.

 

The role

As a Technical Specialist E&A you are involved throughout the entire process, main focus is on pre-contract & concept design in close collaboration between D&P on the one hand and Basic Engineering on the other.

The Technical Specialist is also primarily responsible for (development of) standardization of systems and components within his/her discipline and/or specialization.

In given situations you will also focus on interfacing and taking responsibility for the complete scope of supply for a package/system in project realization (act as System Integrator).

You will mitigate business risk through (technical) review of to-be contracted projects, substantively guiding basic design and you are responsible for standardization within own discipline and/or specialization.

Key accountabilities

  • Support and coordinate the three bid stage processes with an increasing degree of intensity, from ROM Bid to Budgetary Bid and Firm Bid, from an Engineering and Operations perspective
  • Participate in design reviews during the Basic and Detailed Engineering
  • Independently assess the (technical) specifications, drawings (e.g. GAP), calculations (including budgetary calculations), methodology / tooling choices and protocols as supplied by D&P
  • Align of scope, with project stakeholders, of the (pre-contract) Technical Feasibility Study to be executed by Basic Engineering
  • Identify potential risks in the engineering process and deliverables and formulate proposals to mitigate these
  • Provide judgment on construction choices, use of materials, design and more
  • Guide engineers in all phases in a consultative manner and give functional support and specific instruction
  • Document all analysis, advice and insights
  • Provide guidance to internships
  • Identify and implement possibilities to standardize systems / materials / components / tooling, in consultation with Product Groups, Engineering, Supply Chain and Yards
  • Coordinate (engineering) activities, promotes standardization
  • Ensure that MSV defined/selected standards (of systems and/or components) are integrated into the technical specifications and drawings, as supplied/compiled by D&P
  • Ensure that MSV standards are kept up-to-date, in collaboration with Engineering, Supply Chain (ref. Category Management Team) and Yards
  • Identify technology developments within the engineering domain for optimization of the value chain
  • Collate and process product feedback (PFL’s) from within the entire division and responsible for initiating and embedding improvements
  • Give specific (high level) advice to engineers and project teams regarding adjustments, improvement and all other technical aspects within the own specialism
  • Ensure tailored and if needed detailed technical advice

Skills & experience

  • Completed (higher to academic) education in own technical discipline (e.g. shipbuilding & naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering / automation, HVAC, other)
  • At least ten years of relevant work experience
  • Extended E&A knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience in engineering and production processes (accent may differ)
  • You are an authority in your own specialism
  • You work accurately and carefully, with an eye for details
  • You communicate effectively, taking into account the level of parties communicated with
  • You are focused on taking action, taking action from your own strength and waiting no longer (for others) than necessary
  • You achieve constant quality, detecting problems and adjust within the permitted standards
  • You have quality awareness and anticipate to problems and recognize hidden defects
